Integration into Web Design

Payments can be integrated into a website in a number of ways. The transaction processing can be checked with a gateway service test account as the website is being developed.

The most common is making a payment at checkout from a shopping cart. A gateway service that is compatible with the shopping cart transmits the data in the background to the processing bank. The processing Bank verifies the transaction and returns a response code for approval or decline of the transaction. The shopping cart takes this response and creates the “Thank you for your order” page or the “So Sorry” page for a decline.

A variation of making a payment from the website is with a payment page. The payment page does not require a shopping cart. A merchant that does not have a product line to put in a shopping cart would use this method. Non profit organizations can accept donations, customers can pay invoices, rent or one time fees and buy a product from single item website.

Another method of web payment is with an electronic invoice. The customer places an order on the website. An electronic invoice is sent to the customer that contains a link that they can logon to the payment page to make their payment.

Some merchants that get orders that they have to verify will follow up with a phone call to confirm details of the website order. They can take the payment over the phone and enter it on a Virtual Terminal provided by the gateway service. Most gateway services provide the Virtual Terminal at no additional cost.
